Dental Implants at Union Dental

To replace missing teeth, dental implants are a favorite with both our patients and our dentists. Our patients find implants are the most practical, aesthetic and permanent replacements for their missing teeth. Dental implants are commonly included in both cosmetic and restorative treatment plans.

An implant is made up of a porcelain crown—the replacement tooth—anchored by a titanium implant, a slender post placed in the bone of the jaw. Once the implant is placed, it is allowed to heal for three to six months so it can bond fully with the bone.

When that healing is complete, the next step is the placement of a small cap or collar on top of the implant so the gum gets ready for the placement of the final tooth. When the gum has healed, the patient’s crown is manufactured and affixed to the implant.

Anchoring Individual Teeth or Dentures

An implant can be used for a single tooth, multiple teeth or as a support for partial or complete dentures. In each case, it’s essential to select the correct location for each titanium implant. Placement in strong, whole jawbone is vital for long-term success.

For single tooth replacement, the implant is placed in the location of the missing tooth’s root. However, when the goal is support for complete dentures, four, six or more implants will be placed in the jaw in the best locations to secure the denture. For a partial denture, a smaller number of implants would be needed.

The Benefits of Implants

One advantage of a dental implant is that it is fixed and permanent. For an individual tooth, a dental implant will be indistinguishable from your other teeth. It will look, feel and act just like your natural teeth.

Partial and complete dentures supported by implants will not shift, click or come loose. They also enable our patients to choose whatever foods they want. With implant-supported dentures, there are no more dietary restrictions.

Implants also transmit chewing and biting pressures to the bones in the jaw, just like natural teeth do. This continuous stimulation helps keep upper and lower jawbone healthy. When teeth are missing for long periods of time, this bone tends to weaken and get thinner. By helping maintain stronger bones in the face, implants actually help our patients preserve the youthful contours of their faces—another advantage.
